This is a fabulous mini unit about insects. It is filled with TONS of background information for the teacher about insects and beautiful REAL picture cards that can be shared with students. I learned so much about insects while I was putting this information together!
The lessons are centered around three questions:
1) What is an insect?
2) Is it an insect or not an insect?
3) Why do we need insects?
Each question includes picture cards for learning new vocabulary and sorting activities and an accompanying worksheet for students to complete.
Students will learn the parts of an insect by singing a fun song, looking at interesting picture cards, and completing a worksheet. Extra chart pieces are included.
Based on what students have learned about how to identify insects, they will complete a sorting exercise based on if it is an insect or not.
Students will learn about why insects are important to our world. Extra cards are included to learn about silkworms and how silk is made.
Lots of information about Carpenter Ants is included because they have clear insect parts for identification and they are fascinating to learn about. Ants also live everywhere in our world.
If you have a classroom ant farm, the informational cards in this unit would be the perfect compliment to learning about ants.
Many of the picture cards are great discussion starters and may prompt students to do more research about the topics.
