Classification and taxonomy is such a fun topic to teach! This biology activity, "Let's Learn to Use and Build a Dichotomous Classification Key" is guaranteed to engage your students while providing a fun and highly educational activity.

Suitable for Biology and Life Science students in grades 7-12.

What is the purpose of this activity?
• Students will learn about dichotomous classification keys.
• Students will learn why classification is necessary, the definition of a dichotomous key, and how to use a dichotomous key.
• Students will write and develop their own classification key.
• Encourages students to use good observation and critical thinking skills.

What will the students do?
• Students will analyze pictures (included) of 7 different cone-bearing plants, and use the included dichotomous key to classify them.
• Students will learn to construct a classification key of their own.
• Students are given pictures of 12 different primates and asked to make their own classification key.
• There are also 10 follow up questions for students to answer.

Answers and teaching tips are included. You will receive both an editable Word document as well as a pdf form of this activity.
