Product Description
This activity was created to target language goals that relate to following directions, using and identifying positional concepts (in, on, in front, between, behind, over and under), making requests for items and giving directions.

Included in this pack is a bread, cheeses, meats and sandwich toppings, sentence strips with object cards and positional word cards, and three worksheets (Let’s make a sandwich-what do we need?, How to make a sandwich-picture sequencing and Let’s Follow Directions) to complete after the activity or send home for practice.

Activity One: Targeting making requests for items: The students make requests (with the help of the “I want the” sentence strip) for specific items. (I want the bread, I want the mustard, etc).

Follow up activity 1: Let’s make a sandwich! What do we need? Worksheet. Students cut out and glue pictures of the materials needed to make a sandwich.
Follow up activity 2: How to make a sandwich picture sequencing worksheet. Students must place 6 picture cards in the correct sequence.

Activity Two: Positional concepts. Print off the following directions sheet. The students are given sandwich making set. Read the instructions to the students. Students follow the directions they are given.

Follow up activity 1: Where is the ______? Ask the student where a specific item is located. Students can answer independently (depending on their ability level) or use the sentence strips provided to facilitate the use of answering in complete sentences.

Activity Three: Barrier game (targets giving directions and following directions that include positional concepts listed in Activity Two). Give each student a sandwich set. Place a file folder or other barrier between the two students so they cannot see each other’s sandwiches. Every player should have the same set of materials in front of them. The players take turns giving the other players very specific directions (depending on their ability level) on how to arrange the materials in front of them. The goal of the activity is to have the players’ sandwich scene look exactly the same by the end of the game. Use the sentence strips to support your students’ ability to give instructions.
