This unit is a meaningful way to integrate the Four Cs of 21st Century Learning: creativity, critical thinking, communication & collaboration. It can be used for lessons on Earth Day, recycling, character education, or an end of the year class project.

In my classroom, this project has culminated in a “Day of Play”, where projects are set up around the classroom and every kiddo gets to play with their classmate’s cardboard creations! We also invited other classrooms & administrators to play.

Use your imagination and run with it!

Background:
Caine’s Arcade is a short film about 9-year-old Caine Monroy from East Los Angeles who built his own handmade cardboard arcade in his father’s used auto body shop. After a summer of waiting for customers with no luck, filmmaker Nirvan Mullick discovered the arcade. He became Caine’s first customer and filmed the documentary.

His story shows how engineering can be learned in a natural and interest-driven way, and has started a movement encouraging children around the world to create, design, and play!
