This 9-page packet is a great tool for introduction, remediation, or review of the skill of summarizing. It uses guides notes to explore the components of a strong summary, asks students to compare and analyze summaries, and has students create summaries of their own based on two reading passages - a non-fiction article about service dogs and a fiction story about a pet dog coming home for the first time. My students were engaged by the articles and really enjoyed the activities. Afterwards, they were much more comfortable writing their own summaries and distinguishing important information from non-important. I hope that this will be helpful for you and your students!
