Help your students learn to use text features while reading short original non-fiction texts. Lessons can be used to supplement regular classroom instruction or for small reading groups.
The lessons are designed to help 2nd graders meet standards. There are activities focused on Table of Contents and Index and when and how to use each. Practice sheets help students learn about glossaries and headings.
Emphasis is on teaching students to use various text features to find specific information in the text quickly and to know which text features is most helpful in a given situation. Lessons would also be appropriate for first grade enrichment or for 3rd graders for intervention groups.
Non-fiction topics include:
Why Bees Sting
How Animals Get Ready for Winter
Note: I have an additional unit in my store with lessons on headings, sub-headings, captions, pictures, labels and maps.
