Let’s Visit the North Pole is a unit that begins with reading a fiction selection, The Polar Express, and Literature Circles modified for primary readers. There are response to literature activities that may be completed after Literature Circles. Students then read a non-fiction passage, Let’s Visit the North Pole, which is an informational text written for primary readers. The activities included require students to interact with text in a way that addresses some of the CCSS. Students will read, write, think and talk about text. They will support their answers and learn how to cite evidence. The culminating activity choices are designed to encourage critical thinking. The text is designed to be rigorous for young readers. Most students will not be able to read the text on their own. Rather, it is designed as a read aloud and read together.
Kindergarten students can be introduced to informational text and practice responding to it. However, at that level, teachers would probably need to do the lessons whole group.
Third grade teachers may find that this is not appropriate for their stronger readers, but it will work for struggling readers.
