Check out this Back to School activity as a way to review letter recognition or letter sound correspondence with the added bonus of some fine motor skills mixed into the fun. Included you will find full size punch cards with the letters around the perimeter, surrounding some back to school graphics in the middle. To prepare, simply print a card for each student on card stock. Decide if you are going to work on letters or sounds and copy the corresponding deck of cards for your use. Laminate the deck for durability. All playing cards and punch cards come in color or black and white versions for your preference. To play, mix up your deck of playing cards. Pick a card and have your students find the corresponding letter on his/her punch card. Using a hole punch, simply punch out that letter. You can use this activity several ways:
*Match lowercase to lowercase letter (in sequence or out of sequence)
*Match capital to capital letter (in sequence or out of sequence)
*Match lowercase to capital or capital to lowercase letter (in or out of sequence)
*Match picture to beginning sound letter (in sequence or out of sequence)
Having the letters in sequence around the perimeter of the punch card makes it easier for your emerging readers to locate the correct letter. Mixing up the sequence of the letters makes it more challenging for your students. This activity has been so fun for my students and is requested often. Their fine motor skills have improved greatly due to the repeat of this activity throughout the school year.
