This word matching activity is an important component of literacy acquisition where students identify and name letters to see if they match the letters in the words. This gives students the opportunity to practice rapid letter naming. A knowledge of letters is a strong predicator in students learning to read. Letter recognition also facilitates word recognition, and an emphasis on letter matching and recognition early in kindergarten secures the alphabet in memory as a foundation for future reading. Having students additionally cut and color the pictures furthers their fine motor skills development.

.Demonstrate how students will cut apart the pictures.

.Pick a picture that has been cut apart. Count with the students how many letters are in the word.

.Starting with the first word on the blank sheet, count the letters in each word. When you get to a word with the same amount of letters, stop.

.Hold the picture above the word box, and very slowly say the name of each letter with the students. For the picture here you would say: “a” (point to the a in angel), “a” (point to the a in acorn), “n” (point to the n in angel), “c” (point to the c in acorn). “Uh-oh – do they match?”.

.Move onto the next word with the same amount of letters and repeat the process until you have a word match. Glue the picture in place and color.

.Continue until all the spaces have been covered. There will be one leftover picture for every letter.
