I created this book (and others) in order to support literacy in any Early Intervention, Early Childhood, and Pre-K programs. But can be used for any age.
I tried to use sentences that followed the introduction of phonics as indicated by the Jolly Phonics Program. According to the Jolly Phonics Program there is a systematic way in which to introduce letter recognition as well as phonemic awareness. The letter Nn is included in the first step of this program as well as the first step as defined by the National Right to Read Foundation.
The Jolly Phonic Program lists the introduction of letters as follows:
1. s, a, t, i, p, n
2. c, k, e, h, r, m, d
3. g, o, u, l, f, b
4. ai, j, oa, ie, ee, or
5. z, w, ng, v, oo
6. y, x, ch, sh, th
7. qu, ou, oi, ue, er, ar
Whereas the NRRF has a much more in depth system: http://www.nrrf.org/old/PhonicsPrimer.doc
As we know children are typically visual learners. In fact, 65% of humans are visual learners (https://www.forbes.com/sites/tjmccue/2013/01/08/what-is-an-infographic-and-ways-to-make-it-go-viral/#77e841917272)
Therefore this type of simple book that introduces a sentence with the letter N and a correlating picture will be more likely to set it in their minds.
Also, as a note of interest, How Wee Learn suggests starting with the letters of the child's name as that is something that is going to be most personal for them. (brilliant!) Also suggested using lowercase letters and I can completely agreee.
I'd also find a font that uses the normally printed "a" (not available in this text box obviously). But I did use the normal "a" in my Nn book. So much of my position is a little bit of other jobs. I do ABA, but in order to have high success I have to know a lot about other areas like speech, literacy, Assistive tech devices and how to implement, occupational therapy, sensory processing disorder, etc. I'm not an SLP, but do self studies so that I can provide a well rounded therapy service for the highest success rate possible with my clients.
