Looking for a way to spice up or energize your classroom word study? These Words Their Way aligned word searches are formatted a little differently than my other sets of word searches.
In order to make them developmentally appropriate for 1st and 2nd grade students or for older students who need this activity modified, I divided the lengthy word lists in half. Most word searches have students discovering 10 words.

My students begin their individualized Words-Their-Way word study sequence with a "blind" word search as their first activity (word search does not contain a list of words). This routine activity is meant to be an engaging, fun way for students to discover their word study words and sharpen their ability to recognize words that are spelled correctly (a major key to spelling improvement). Students also demonstrate their understanding of sorting by sound and/or pattern as they record the words they have found. Because of the philosophy behind the creation of the word searches, you will not find lists included with the searches, but can find the list of words in the Words Their Way developmental word sort books. This set of word searches is based on the Letter-Name Alphabetic Spellers book (the red book).
This product is intended for teachers who use (or plan to use) Words Their Way word sorts. (The books are amazing for teachers who implement word study!)
This download includes:
* Word Searches for sorts 1-49 in two forms to choose from--
-1 word search per page with a sorting chart
-2 word searches per page for 1/2 sheets to glue in to word study notebooks
*Sample Word Study schedule
*Cover page for teacher binder
*Extras: Word Study tips and a Personal Words sheet
Why word searches for word study? This is an interesting, fun way for students to recognize correct spelling and word patterns. As they find 2-3 words, hopefully they begin to see the pattern for the word search and recognize other words in the sort.
