Letters in various colors are scattered on the playing mat. Students will need to quickly find the letter that corresponds with the card that is revealed. I promise you, this is a highly addictive game that your students will continue to ask for each day.

In this packet you will get TWO different game sets for extending play. I love using these games for small group, Daily 5 work. Once students understand the game, it is an easy independent station. This game is appropriate for no more than four students per playing mat. Each player sits on one side of the mat. There is no ‘right side up’ or ‘wrong side up’ to these mats since the letters go in all different directions. Cards and the mat may be laminated for durability. Likewise, each game set is available in color or save your ink by printing the black and white version on colored card stock. You may either one stack of cards for ‘short play’ or shuffle in both sets of letter cards. (There are two sets of playing cards for differentiating. One set will practice letter names and recognition and the other will practice beginning letter sounds) Place the stack face down in a centrally visible location. You can either have students take turns turning over the playing cards or have a card turner. Before the card is turned over, the turner says, ‘fingers up.’ This is so everyone has their hands up by there body and not ‘hovering’ over the mat unfairly. The card is then turned over, students quickly identify the letter quietly to themselves and then locate that same letter (either a capital or a lowercase version is ok) on the playing mat. The first person use their finger to locate the correct letter and say “Yatta” (pronounced yacht-ta), gets to keep the card. When all the cards have been played, students count up all their cards to see who has the most. That person gets to be the card turner next. You can also differentiate this activity by having a card reader. This person would simply say the letter on the card without showing the card and have the other students locate the letter on the mat.
