When teaching emergent readers how to read, you can never have enough letter recognition activities in your bag of tricks. Making it multi-sensory makes a letter recognition activity even more engaging for your learners.
Play Doh Letter Pound is a super fun way to practice identifying letters- both capital and lowercase. Included with your download you will find the following:
*a set of color capital alphabet cards
*a set of color lowercase alphabet cards
*a set of black and white capital alphabet cards
*a set of black and white lowercase alphabet cards
*5 black and white capital letter mats
*5black and white lowercase letter mats
To play copy as many mats as you need. You can play whole group, small group, or in centers. Simply cut the letter cards of your choice out. Mix them up and put them in a pile. Meanwhile, students put a ball of play doh on each letter on their letter mat. Teacher chooses a letter card from the deck. Students then look for that letter on their mat. If they find it, they can either pound it with a toy hammer or with their fist. You can play by either matching a capital letter to capital letter, lowercase to lowercase, capital to lowercase, or lowercase to capital letter. Your students can all have the same sheet or there are 5 varieties of capital letter mats or 5 varieties of lowercase letter mats. Mixing in some motor activities always makes my students very enthusiastic participants.
