In designing this product, I was struck by just how many different benchmarks are set forth by different states, counties and districts for kindergarteners. Sometimes what seems to be academically and age appropriate and what standards have been placed on our kids don’t seem to mesh.
Today many districts, including my own, have changed the end of the year benchmark to a level D as their “stretch” level. As far as sight words, they too, are ever changing and increasing. It used to be kids needed to be able to read 25 word by the end of kindergarten. Now some places are requiring up to 50 words!
Whatever your case may be, this data system will still benefit you and your students and help you to identify who should be receiving extra intervention or support from parent volunteers, aides or para educators or student mentors!
The editable Excel data sheet will allow you to put in your own benchmarks as you or your district see fit.
You also have an editable Excel spreadsheet that will allow you to get an in-depth look at your whole class. Once you have entered the data for known letters, sounds and sight words you can easily tell which areas to hit first. It also allows you to form flexible needs groups for certain letters/sounds and/or sight words to target. I did this with my entire kindergarten and we could easily see that the letter “w” the majority of the kids couldn’t identify. It made it super simple!
You can use this as many times throughout the year and it is great to use at parent conferences, Educational Management team meetings or to determine interventions.
I hope it bring you the information you can use right away!
Thanks for stopping by!
