I always try to let my students record and track their own data whenever possible. When students can record their own data, they become more aware of their progress and learning becomes more meaningful for them. Another bonus is that it makes your life easier as a teacher!
How to use:
This book can be used to track either letter or sounds mastery. The student reads their booklet daily to an adult or a reliable student that has reached mastery. If the student gets the letter/sound correct, they put a star or check in the box below each letter. If they get the answer incorrect, they put an “x” in the box. You may also choose to let them color the boxes (e.g. green for correct, red for incorrect), which is why I left the directions off of each page in case you want to change it up. Once the student has gotten an answer correct 5 times in a row (this number can be adjusted) they have mastered it. Once they master a letter, they refer to the last page in the booklet and color in that letter. This is done daily until all letters/sounds are mastered. Teachers can easily check mastery by simply referring to the last page in the student’s booklet. These can also serve as excellent data when holding parent conferences or IEP meetings.
So use your time on other things and let your students do your data for you!
