In this focusing activity for Martin Luther King, Jr.’s Letter from Birmingham Jail, students will experiment with a fun and effective technological tool for conveying complex information: the infographic. Because of the infographic’s visual appeal, students have a better chance of learning and retaining the key background information needed for a close-reading of the Letter from Birmingham Jail. The activity helps students become self-directed learners as they conduct their research, create their infographic, and teach the information to their classmates.
The activity includes the activity handout, a grading rubric, a student sample, a credibility of sources worksheet, and a list of background references from King’s Letter.
Suitable for English and history teachers, this activity covers Common Core State Standards for reading informational texts, writing, and listening and speaking.
It is one component of our 71-page unit on King’s “Letter from Birmingham Jail.”
