This is a great assessment (Formative or summative) for students studying the age of exploration. This activity promotes student's critical thinking and application skills. Students are assigned the task to play the role of an explorer from the 1500s. They are to write a persuasive letter to the King or Queen of a country that they are requesting money from. They make an argument as to why they should be funded and the reasons that exploration is needed. The goal to to assess students' knowledge on reasons for exploration during that time; trade with Asia, acquiring new land, power, wealth and spreading Christianity.
