This is a great writing assignment to use the first weeks of school in an ELA classroom! It involves students writing a letter to you (their ELA teacher) about their thoughts, strengths, and weaknesses in regards to reading and writing. It also involves students setting measurable goals for reading and writing. An excellent piece to use as a writing sample! This letter also helps teachers see where students stand in regards to their own reading and writing. Knowing their strengths, weaknesses, and opinions about these two areas can be quite informative for the teacher and can direct their instruction.
The directions for students are very clear and complete. Helpful handouts are included to help students. They include a brainstorm sheet, list of genres, "What A Good Writer Does" list, "What a Good Reader Does" list, and a scoring rubric.
