In this creative writing assignment, students choose a character from a novel and write a "letter home". They consider what version of events the character might include in a letter to a loved one, deciding what to play up and what to omit. This is a great assignment for any grade level and can be applied to any book that features characters away from home.
Here are just a few examples:
*The Odyssey – Homer *A Separate Peace – John Knowles *Divergent – Veronica Roth *All Quiet on the Western Front – Erich Maria Marque *The Westing Game – Ellen Raskin
*Heart of Darkness – Joseph Conrad *The Fellowship of the Ring – J. R. R. Tolkien *Looking for Alaska – John Green *Ender’s Game – Orson Scott Card

I originally designed this assignment for Michael Shaara's The Killer Angels and it was an absolute blast! I had students turn in letters with all manner of coffee-stained paper, etc., to mimic war-battered stationery.
