Looking for something fun for your Kindergarteners? As a coach and previous reading interventionist, this was one of my favorite activities. Not only did the students love it, but it afforded me the flexibility to differentiate while keeping the students engaged. This was also such an easy activity to leave for a substitute... especially once the students knew how to play! I just had to leave a list of the 9 letters my kiddos were working on and sort out some cards to match. The directions are easy and like I said... the kids already knew the rules, so it was a piece of cake!
As you will find in all products at, "The Core of Coaching" there are some coaching reminders, directions, and variations. There are 126 picture cards and the variety of answers you may get from many of them only encourages vocabulary growth. I found this particularly useful with my English language learners and the daily review of words with familiar pictures made the vocabulary acquisition even easier.
This activity is for use during small group guided reading or with a volunteer in the classroom as practice. Play time can range from 10 minutes to 30 minutes which makes it easy to fit into any lesson as a reward, or extended for practice or assessment. Students will use picture cards to listen for sounds and then associate the sound to a letter. They will have practice writing the letters and then matching the sound to the letter in order to try and get a Tic-Tac-Toe.
With different variations of the game they will have opportunities to work at their level and provide you, the teacher, with immediate feedback as to where they are in the mastery of these skills.
Please let me know if you have any questions so I can work harder to give you the best possible product.
