I like to teach not just French language, but French history. Every year, my school has a full day Carnaval. I spend 6-8 weeks before Carnaval on a Carnaval/Festival related unit. I love to teach about the voyageurs and the fur trade. My students know much better now why we take French - history proves the importance. I think this units are my best even if not fully in French language.
This unit focuses on the novel The Broken Blade by William Durbin. It is about a young French Canadian boy who becomes a voyageur. Though the novel is in English, I have created ways to also make French language materials with it. This is one of my favourite units! I will soon also create a Level 6 unit for next year on the sequel on this novel. There is some (very little) difficult historical content in the novel that you may need to send a letter home to parents. Please read the novel first and check with your administration.
