These passages are meant to be used for a jigsaw activity, where students get together in “expert” groups or pairs to read the passage (e.g. all of the students reading the ‘Reduce’ passage get together or partners with the same passage partner read together) then a “jigsaw” group is formed, with one representative from each passage (one reduce, one reuse, and one recycle) to put their puzzle pieces together and teach the rest of the group about what they learned. In my class, we then glued their three-piece puzzles onto construction paper and hung them around the room to help us remember what we had learned.
Additionally, the passages include close reading questions that require multiple readings and referring back to the text for evidence, and a four square vocabulary activity for students to do either independently or in their expert groups. The vocabulary activities are especially great for ESL/EFL/ELL students who need to expand their academic vocabulary.
The passages are leveled- the Reduce passage is the easiest to read, followed by reuse, followed by recycle.
