Snipped Stories are original leveled fiction stories written for struggling middle grade readers. I have been working with students in the middle and high school who are English Language Learners, Special Education 1:12:1 and 1:15:1, and general education students who have slipped through the cracks and are not reading at grade level. For each of these students, I have found it challenging to provide them with books and stories that are not only at their reading level, but also appropriate for their interest level. Motivating struggling readers is a challenge without access to motivating and interesting texts. I began writing my own stories as a way to motivate my reluctant readers in grades 5 – 8. I often wanted to use a single text for whole class instruction in order to teach a specific reading strategy or skill, but with student’s reading levels ranging from J to P within the same class, it was impossible to find a single text that could be used for every student.
I started writing Snipped Stories so that my students could access interesting and motivating texts, while practicing and using the reading strategies that were taught during mini-lessons and whole class instruction.
I do incorporate comprehension tasks for each of the stories, however, these can be modified or ignored depending on the strategies or skills that you as a teacher would like to focus on within the story.
There are six unique and original stories included in this unit. They can be used as independent reading texts, intervention resources, guided reading texts, whole-class instruction materials, and as a progress monitoring tool.
