These Levels of Understanding posters can be placed in your room to encourage students to be mindful of their own learning journey. In my own classroom I use formative assessment in various ways and these posters serve as a reminder to my students to use appropriate language when speaking about their learning journey. The students understand what each of the levels are and can tell me if they are ‘meeting expectations’ for a specific lesson. I use student generated criteria and “I Can” statements in addition to the to the posters so students understand I want them all to be at the “Fully Meeting Expectations” level or higher.
These posters are greatly supplemented by my Formative Assessment Exit Slips which can also be found in my store, and will help your students develop appropriate language for speaking about their individual learning journeys.
There are 2 versions of the posters in the packet. One with the short hand I use when marking select assignments. I find when numbers are used instead of the formative assessment descriptors students do not focus on how they can improve and instead just use the number as a score.
