A great means of formative assessment is to ask students to self-reflect after each lesson. These posters provide 4 levels of understanding and their definitions (novice, apprentice, master, expert). Students can raise the number of fingers to show you how they feel, or privately write the number in the corner of their assignment before turning in to you.
The number system can be used with any grade/age level. The terms are best with more developed learners, while helping to build their vocabulary as well.
