Make it: A Day in Blue Jeans
Child or children can wear blue jeans for the day or 2.
Bring some old jeans and cut out the pockets to make an organizer for pens and pencils, etc.
Watch a video clip on the life a miner or cowboy as they were the original group of people who wore jeans.
Ask a couple of critical thinking questions like how have jeans become part of our culture, not just for the labor workers.
How about the fashions in the 1800's, what did the middle or upper-class wear?
What are the brand name for jeans these days? How long have these brand names been on the market? Do you know who invented these jeans? Let's find out.
Read and study this packet which unfolds the history of Levi Blue Jeans. Followed by different literacy activities.
I usually like to follow it with art. Art helps a child to process the information into real life or abstract. They can use different pattern cloths like bandanas or those loose pieces sold in a store for a $1.00 and cut them and glue and make a collage on a pair of old jeans. Also, they can use cotton ear buds to make a work of art on a canvas.

"Imagine you are starting a business" Activity: With this activity, the class can come together and "Play Store" and brainstorm how to open a cafe, bookstore, restaurant, tour agency, etc. This helps them to relate what they learn in class to real life. Besides this activity, they can also hold a bake sale where they can do some advertising before the bake day to promote their sales like buy one get one free, etc.

Math: You can work on measurements, yards, feet, and inches, or the metric units,
Social Studies: California Gold Rush, Miners, and Cowboys in the 1800's. Have the kids do a pretend camp out, put a tent in a classroom, make some hot chocolate, play card games and have some marshmallows, cheese, and crackers.
Movie: Toy Story where Woody Pride is seen as a leader.
I think it will be a fun day to do these activities. Let me know if you have done some of the activities and share the fun with me.

Look for the California Gold Rush and Cowboy packet which will be up soon that goes with the same theme on blue jeans.
