Once upon a time, students were given a project about Lewis and Clark......
This project is a fun way for students to learn about Lewis and Clark's Corps of Discovery. They really take charge of their own learning by completing a web quest to gain detailed background information about the journey. Then students take the time to organize the information in a planning packet. Finally, they will create a children's book showcasing all they have learned. A fun culminating activity that I do is a "story time" where students have the opportunity to share their books with their classmates. Depending on the make-up of your school or your school district's policies, this assignment also offers the chance for your students to visit lower grades to read their children's books!
Included in this download:
1. A student information packet about the project. This includes a detailed web quest that corresponds with each aspect of the project. I usually link the project documents to my eBoard or edmodo account so the students do not have to type out the URL's!
2. A teacher answer key for the student information packet.
3. A student planning packet for the children's book
4. Grading rubric for the project
Files are saved as MS word documents so you can make adjustments as needed for your student population.
I noted the teaching duration as "N/A" because it depends on how much time you can devote to this - in and out of class. Here is a timeline I have used in the past to map out this project:
Day 1: introduce project, including grading rubric
Day 2: begin web quest during class time using computer lab
Day 3: continue computer lab
Day 4: last day in computer lab
Day 5: Planning packet
Day 6: Planning packet
Day 7: Planning packet
Day 8 - 21: work on children's book
(on own time outside of class)
Day 22: Children's Book Due! Story Time Culminating Activity :)
