Bring this valuable teaching and learning tool to your own classroom!

Learning centers are an amazing way to cover a complex topic in the middle school history classroom. Learning centers encourage high-level, independent thinking and allow students to learn about important events, people, and places with a level of depth and complexity that is hard to duplicate through other instructional methods.

Learning centers (or stations as I call them in my class) can either supplement your lesson on a particular topic, or they can provide the primary instruction on that topic. They are often multidisciplinary, showing students that history is interwoven with other subjects and connected to many aspects of life. Technology is often incorporated along with other resources and texts. This learning centers kit, for example, incorporates reading, writing, science, mapping, art work, videos, and primary sources.

Students will analyze the Lewis and Clark expedition through five stations with this activity - currency analysis & design, videos with critical thinking questions, artwork analysis, mapping, and primary source journals and observations.

By the time they finish with this activity, your students will have a broad understanding of the Lewis and Clark expedition!
