Requires approximately 3 class periods.
Lewis and Clark kept very detailed journals about their adventure. This activity is an excellent way to help students understand exactly how difficult and remarkable their journey was to complete. Students will enjoy trying to decode the historic words of both Lewis and Clark, as they were not very good spellers! This activity may be completed independently, in small groups, partners or as an entire class.
Students will learn to use Primary Sources to complete this activity. Internet access or hard copies of the journals are needed. It works best with the Internet. This activity integrates Basic Math, Language Arts Skills and Computer Skills into Social Studies. Students will use Higher-Level thinking skills to: explore the journals, interpret, draw conclusions, read for understanding, decode spelling, and infer.
