Teach history and build reading skills at the same time!
This Common Core aligned unit builds literacy in context focusing on the expedition of Lewis and Clark. Working through this unit will provide students with an opportunity to build foundational literacy skills including decoding, fluency, spelling, vocabulary, and comprehension. Teacher's pages, answer keys, and an assessment are included. This product works well with struggling readers, English learners, and Special Education students.
Everything is ready to print and includes:
Students begin the lesson focusing on word parts contained in the text. By starting with word parts, students will have an easier time decoding the tier three vocabulary when reading the text.
Lewis and Clark Informational Text:
The text is designed and set up to measure student fluency. Working with a partner, students complete a cold and hot read of the text, noting the words per minute each time.
Students will have an opportunity to track their fluency progress by creating a bar graph for each reading.
Spelling and Vocabulary:
This portion of the lesson starts with spelling dictation followed by vocabulary practice.
Ten multiple choice questions are included to assess comprehension of the informational text.
The summative assessment covers all aspects of the lesson including word parts, reading comprehension, and vocabulary.
Answer Keys/Teachers Guides:
An answer key and/or teacher’s guide is included for each portion of the lesson.
