The following five-page document on Liam O'Flaherty's "The Sniper" includes an anticipation guide on page one, comprehension questions on pages two, three, and four, and discussion questions on page five. The anticipation guide prepares students for the story and theme-related topics of discussion posed in the short story. The anticipation guide features "before" statements that students will write whether they agree or disagree with each statement and explain why. Students are asked to complete the "after" statements after they have reflected on the work.
The comprehension and discussion questions on pages two, three, four, and five have a few low level comprehension questions on story (e.g. Why is the sniper on the roof?), but many questions are higher level, critical thinking questions (e.g. How does the setting affect the mood?) and assess students' analysis of the work's conflict, dynamic characterization, figurative language, indirect characterization, inferences, plot, point of view, setting, situational irony, suspense, themes, tragic flaw, and visual imagery. The second page also requires students to look up and find the definitions for vocabulary words that they might not know prior to reading the story to understand how these words are used in O'Flaherty's work.
This packet can be used as a formative assessment to prepare students for a summative assessment of a 20-question multiple choice quiz that is available as a separate purchase.
