Description

This is a six part unit from Reading Through History that is focused on 4th and 5th grade Common Core reading standards. It includes six separate lessons focused on the history and symbolism of some of America's most iconic symbols. The lessons include: the Liberty Bell, the Statue of Liberty, the New Colossus poem, the USS Constitution "Old Ironsides", the Star-Spangled Banner flag, and the Star-Spangled Banner (National Anthem). These are very informative readings designed to instill knowledge in the students while they practice improving their reading and writing skills. The questions are designed to allow the students to filter through the information multiple times, thus enhancing the value of the learning experience. Students should walk away with new and useful knowledge, all the while improving their Common Core skills. There is a one or two page reading activity for each topic, followed by reading comprehension questions, guided reading activities, vocabulary activities, student summaries, and a student response essay question. This download includes enough material to cover up to six 40 to 50 minute sections of a standard class period.
