Product Description

Help students compare and contrast story elements -- characters, setting, and plot -- with these two stories. First, there's an old classic -- The Three Bears by Paul Galdone -- which is paired with a Christmas-y retelling called Santa and the Three Bears by Dominic Catalano.

Quick note -- YouTube's "Storytime with Ryan and Craig" has a great reading of Galdone's Three Bears at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MJmC1ec4osI, which runs around 7 minutes. Your older kids will especially get a kick out of these two! They are a comedy team from LA who love kids' books, and this is a side hustle for them!

Anyway -- after the stories, your students will work with a Venn diagram to sort out all the similarities and differences. My littles (PreK-1st) have a cut-and-glue version of this activity for non-readers, but my older students (2nd-3rd) have to generate some note-taking skills in order to complete their work. (I let my students work in pairs, but I'm also a stickler for complete sentences and correct punctuation.) :) The big kids' exit ticket also has just a bit of opinion writing to finish things off. If the timing feels a bit tight to you, this can definitely be taught over two weeks to cover your bases well.

I've included my answer keys in your packet with a couple of corresponding exit tickets to help you tie everything up with a big, non-stress bow!

This is a great set if you need to leave a sub lesson that can stretch for several grade levels. Super easy -- print the activities, leave the books out, and the instructions, answer keys, and exit tickets are all right there, so you can check it over when you return. I hope this helps make your days a little easier!
