Life Application Vocabulary Unit, Part 2

Many research studies have cited the importance of explicit vocabulary instruction- in fact, a study by Steven Stahl and Marilyn Fairbanks found that “if a teacher used direct vocabulary instruction, a student at the 50th percentile would be expected to improve to the 83rd percentile. In comparison, a student who didn’t receive direct vocabulary instruction would be expected to remain at the 50th percentile.” (Vocabulary for the Common Core- Robert J. “Vocabulary is also related to basic mental processes and skills that affect students’ overall academic achievement…knowing more words allows studetns to think about more concepts in more ways” – Vocabulary for the Common Core, Written by Robert Marzano.

A meta-analysis performed by Steven Stahl and Marily Fairbanks found that a student who is in the 50th percentile “would be expected to improve to the 83rd percentile. This is a companion vocabulary piece built to compliment the regular education curriculum.

This set of activities was created to preteach and reteach what’s going on in the classroom! Pick and choose – or teach them all!

Student worksheets for each lesson

Multi-way flashcards – can either make them for matching the word to the definition by folding them left to right and laminating or, put the word on the front with the definition on the back for memorization. Build on them, 8 words at a time. There is laminating and cutting involved, but this should last 2 months and can be easily utilized for review for the entire year!!! Hint- I would print the cards off twice and use them both ways for added versatility! Keep the students engaged!
