This is an excellent lab for the beginning of the year when looking at a Biology or any other life science course. This lab is set up so that students will observe 24 objects. The students will then analyze the objects to see whether the object should be classified as living or non-living. They will then justify their answer by figuring out which of the 8 main life characteristics the object possess. This lab works great when set up in station around the room. Also, this lab is highly adaptable so you can choose which objects you want your students to look at. When I run this lab, I like to choose some objects that make the students think about what truly defines a living thing, Some of my favorite items to put out are sponges, Mexican jumping beans, pond water under a microscope, and bones of different organisms. The students love this lab because it gets them out of their seats and investigating.
This lab does include post-lab questions concerning the objects you have chosen and the 8 life characteristics. Since you may choose which objects you want to put out, answers will differ. Therefore, an answer key does not come with this product.
