PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

This pack was created to provide resources to meet the CCS with short, engaging nonfiction text. This pack contains one printable book about the life cycle of the chicken. There are three leveled versions of the book. The book is one page, printed back to back in black and white to save ink.

There are three approximate levels of the text, beginning third grade, mid third grade, and end third grade. Please note, none of the text features are included in leveling. The texts are discreetly leveled in the right corner of the cover. The levels are coded as follows:

• 3B= Beginning of third grade
• 3M= Middle of third grade
• 3E= End of third grade

There is one page of possible teaching points for the teacher. This page is perfect if the teacher decides to use the passages in small groups. The teaching points include: the author’s purpose for writing the text, specific questions about the text to enhance student understanding, and a list of possible vocabulary to target. The vocabulary may be related to how difficult the word is to decode or if there is a multiple meaning of the word. All of the questions and vocabulary on the teaching points page are different than the questions about the passage, so that the teacher can use the passage questions as an assessment.

• Also included are additional activities to give students more practice interacting with the text. The activities are divided into pre-reading activities, during reading activities, and after reading activities. The last section provides additional practice with text features from the book.

Before Reading- Three pre-reading activities are included.
• In the first activity, teachers will share the vocabulary cards with photographs.
• The second activity is an anticipation guide. Students will complete the guide before reading and then again after reading to compare their learning.
• The last activity is a word sort. Cards for an open or closed word sort are also included. Teacher directions with tips for implementing the sorts are also included. Category cards are included if the teacher chooses to do a closed sort.

During Reading- Two activities are included.
• In the first activity, students will create their own questions and then answer the questions using evidence from the text.
• In the second activity, the students will respond to the text on bookmarks. To prepare this page, simply copy the two bookmark pages front to back and then cut on the dotted lines. There are 3 bookmarks to a page.

After Reading- Five activities are included.
• In the first activity, students will find the main idea and supporting details of the text. Two versions of this activity are available, a worksheet or a page for a flip flap book for the interactive notebook.
• The second activity asks students to answer 5 comprehension questions from the text.
• The third activity is another activity best suited for the interactive notebook. Students cut out tabs with chickens and use context clues to figure out the meaning of the words from the text that are on the flaps.
• In the next activity, students will connect steps in a scientific process. Two versions of this activity are included. The first version is a worksheet. Students will draw a picture of four of the main steps from the text and write about them. The second activity is a flip flap book for interactive notebooks. Students draw a picture of the step and then write about it under the flap.
• The last activity is a summarizing activity. Students can write three new facts they learned, two facts they found interesting, and one question they still have after reading the book.
The last section of this pack provides additional practice with text features from the book.
• After students read the book, students can cut the article apart and glue the text features into a text features hunt book. A smaller, one page, version of the book is included, in black and white, for students to cut apart.
• Students can also answer questions about the article. Students will have to use the text features to answer the questions. This would be perfect as a center or small group activity. Two different sets of questions are included. One set of questions is more difficult. The cover sheet for the activity is included in color and black and white to best meet the teacher’s needs.
