The attached file is a week-long lesson plan designed to go with the first grade Common Core Curriculum Map Unit "Life Lessons." This lesson plan is a 5 day plan along with a student packet with a cover page and 2 student activity pages. There is also an additional links to videos and websites if you have access you YouTube, United Streaming or Brainpopjr.com. I have included both PDF and Word versions of each document if you would like to make changes to them.
This week focuses on biographies with the essential question: How can stories teach us life lessons?
The lessons are based on the lives of George Washington Carver and Thomas Alva Edison.
The focus standards are:
RI.1.9 Identify basic similarities in and differences between two texts on the same topic (e.g., in illustrations, descriptions, or procedures).
RI.1.2 Identify the main topic and retell key details of a text.
The books I used for the lesson are (these could be changed easily to other biographies about these inventors)
A Weed is a Flower: The Life of George Washington Carver by Aliki
Rookie Biographies: George Washington Carver
A Picture Book of Thomas Alva Edison by David A. Adler
Rookie Biographies: Thomas Alva Edison
