Life Lessons: Week 6
Georgia O’Keeffe: An Artist Study
The attached file is a week-long lesson plan designed to go with the first grade Common Core Curriculum Map Unit "Life Lessons." In the progression of the lessons I wrote, this would be week 6, but it could be taught out of order to fit the needs of your classroom. There are lessons for each day as well as a student packet with a cover page and five activity sheets. I have also linked activities from websites. I have included both Word and PDF versions of both documents so that you can make changes if you would like. The packet is designed so that you could bind it, staple it, or used pieces separately.
This week focuses on biographical information about Georgia O’Keeffe as well as her art work. Students will generate lists of adjectives and then use them to describe multiple works of art by O’Keeffe. They will also watch videos about her, interviews of her and read a biography of her life.
The focus standards are:
L.1.1f Use frequently occurring adjectives.
RI.1.1 Ask and answer questions about key details in a text.
SL.1.2 Ask and answer questions about key details in a text read aloud or information presented orally or through other media.
SL.1.6 Produce complete sentences when appropriate to task and situation.
In this lesson I used videos that are free online, brainpopjr.com videos and the text Georgia O’Keeffe: Getting to Know the World’s Greatest Artists by Mike Venezia which is the text suggested by the curriculum map book.
