Life Lessons: Week 5
The attached file is a week-long lesson plan designed to go with the first grade Common Core Curriculum Map Unit "Life Lessons." In the progression of the lessons I wrote, this would be week 5, but it could be taught out of order to fit the needs of your classroom. There are lessons for each day as well as a student packet with a cover page and three activity sheets. I have also linked activities from websites.
This week focuses on poems about manners with the essential question: How can poems teach us life lessons?
The focus standards are:
RL.1.4 Identify words and phrases in stories or poems that suggest feelings or appeal to the senses.
RL.1.10 With prompting and support, read prose and poetry of appropriate complexity for grade 1.
RL.1.1 Ask and answer questions about key details in a text.
W.1.8 With guidance and support from adults, recall information from experiences or gather information from provided sources to answer a question.
The poems used for these lessons are:
I’m Making a List by Shel Silverstein in Where the Sidewalk Ends
Ridiculous Rose by Shel Silverstein in Where the Sidewalk Ends
Sharing by Shel Silverstein in Falling Up
My Mother Says I’m Sickening by Jack Prelutsky in The New Kid on the Block
*I was able to find all of these poems online
