LS2.D: Social Interactions and Group Behavior

Students will read to understand why animals group together as an adaptation. Students will use the FOCUS method, developed by Two Inspire, to complete text-dependent and evidence based activities over a duration of 3 days. FOCUS is designed to scaffold students learning and provides students and teachers with a consistent close reading routine to integrate reading and writing into science!

Included:

*1 close read- 800 Lexile

*4 task cards- designed with upper level questions and at least 1 writing activity

*Teachers checklist and guides

*Marzano based Student Goal Tracker- allows your students to track their progress. Students become aware of their learning experience through this practice.

*6 Academic Posters for Adaptations Unit- Marzano based

*Rubrics- for easy grading and understanding components

*3 Stations- Consistent with other FOCUS products- These can be used to further extend student learning or for early finishers.

FOCUS Acronym Outline:

F- First Read: RI.10- Students complete a series of highlighting and labeling the text and read independently.

O- Open thinking: RI.1- Students will organize their thoughts by completing a text box. The text box uses text-dependent questions where students answer using the text and citing evidence from the text.

C- Closer Look: During their second read, students listen while their teacher reads the text and annotate using a system preferred by the teacher.

U- Unwrap the text: RI.3- Students analyze the text to complete an activity specifically designed to analyze text features and/or structure of the text.

S- Show: A third and final look at the text allows students multiple times with the content. Students choose 1 of 4 task cards (or teacher can choose 1 in advance) to show what they learned.
