Description
This download includes holiday stories, communication boards, and activities for your Life Skills and Daily Living Skills classes. It's a perfect speech therapy activity leading up to Christmas.
This download includes 3 different holiday books to use with your students. One books discusses the Hanukkah celebration, one book discusses Christmas and the last book reviews the process of picking out a Christmas tree. The activities in these books are meant for elementary, middle, or high school students with moderate to severe disabilities. The books all contain real pictures to support comprehension of the holiday seasons while working on vocabulary and expressive/receptive language skills. The Christmas books do have some pages about ‘Santa’. With my middle school students we’re trying to use age appropriate instruction and move away from ‘Santa’ in some families. I easily remove those parts of the story. There are no comprehension activities related to this part of the story.
With each book you can target vocabulary in isolation with the vocabulary sheet and then teach the vocabulary in the context of a simple story. Read the book through with your students. and talk about the vocabulary words and actions in the story. Highlight the sequence of the story as you read. Talk with your students about their experiences. Read the book a second time and leave out words to have your students fill in the blank. Non verbal students can point to pictures in the book/communication board.. AAC users can use their voice output device. Use the included comprehension sheets to check receptive language skills. Each question has visual answers for non-verbal students. Each book comes with a communication board to aid in increasing expressive language or use as a communication board for non-verbal communicators.
Read the whole story through or just use one page to target a conversational topic. You can review expected situations and discuss expected behaviors and actions for each situation. Some students can use the book as a simple reader. match photos to the story pages
