Learning Objective

Students will be able to recognize and tell the meaning of safety signs in the community.

Product Description

This is a fun life skills activity for students to learn the meaning of signs they see in their community and on the street. These life skills activity can help students not only recognize the signs, but comprehend what each sign means and what they should or shouldn't do in the situation.

* There are 34 safety/traffic/community signs, each with two symbols to choose from to represent the correct action or meaning.

* There is also a game board with a sign in each space. Have students explain what to do at the sign they land on. There is a spinner provided.

* A picture communication board is provided for nonverbal/minimally verbal students.

* 7 pages added with 14 task cards, each with a sign and 3 response choices; students find the correct choice.

• 12 new task cards added for the additional signs.

I work with a number of middle and high school students who are learning to recognize and understand safety and traffic signs. The problem with how the signs are often taught is that they are taught in a discrimination format, where they are asked to “Show me ___.”

They can identify the signs, but know nothing about what to do about them when they see them in the community.

This resource can be used as

1. a file folder activity.

2. a set of worksheets.

3. a set of re-useable worksheets when you laminate each sheet.

The task cards can be used as a write on/wipe off activity, or as clip cards.

You can also take the images with you out in the community. When you approach a sign, hold up the response choices and ask student(s) to tell you what they should do.
