Historical empathy is an important skill that students need to have. This assignment builds off the content knowledge that students will have already covered: Russian Revolution, rise of Stalin, Stalin's reign, etc. Students can learn, through more traditional ways, that Stalin had horrible gulags and killed millions through famines. But, then the students walk away without having connected with the material. This assignment allows students to step into the role of a Russian teenager. The diary entry enhances their historical empathy skills while also allowing students to demonstrate their content knowledge. The product includes the assignment sheet, rubric, and teacher example.
