In this highly engaging activity, students analyze SEVEN different sources about life during the Civil War, then each student completes a source analysis for each one. This was created with the Common Core standards in mind and forces students to engage with the complexity of primary and secondary accounts.
The SEVEN sources involved range from experiences of soldiers on the front lines, how women contributed to the war effort, what civilians could expect as a result of the war, how soldiers were treated and equipped for warfare, and how soldier relaxed, had fun, and fought boredom.
Classes should be broken into 7 groups and source documents should be distributed to each of the groups. Students will complete their source activity packet as they navigate from group to group. Finally, the class will debrief each source, focusing on how each source can teach us about life during the Civil War. Too, an answer key for the source activity packet is included!
To conclude the activity, an alternative picture book assessment rubric has been included!
