In, “Life of Pi” by Yann Martel, Pi sets out on a magical voyageand along with Pi your students will learn what it is to be fully human is to face challenges with humor, wisdom and originality. Students love this story – that draws on their unique skills, beliefs and imagination to full engage adventures few have encountered.

Students learn by applying and solving problemsthrough 100 tasks that engage both sides of their brain through Multiple Intelligences Tasks as they read Life of Pi. Test (with answer key) and Student Generated Essay Questions and Sample Response also included.

The 100 neuro-related facts included here can be purchased separately at These 100 Tasks can be obtained at without the many extra student-ready materials in this complete Life of Pi unit All materials relate to common core standards listed here on pages 28 and 29. This unit is created for your own flexibility in its use – so my suggestions below are simply an approach that works especially well for my students.

Suggested Ten day Life of Pi Novel Unit plan: Read 10 chapters(most are very short) in class daily and have one group of three members use task their cards to present findings to engage class. Group 1 – addresses tasks 1 – 10 on day 1; Group 2 – addresses tasks 11 – 20 on day 2; Group 3 – addresses tasks 21 – 30 on day 3; Group 4 – addresses tasks 31 – 40 on day 4; Group 5 – addresses tasks 41 – 50 on day 5; Group 6 – addresses tasks 51 – 60 on day 6; Group 7 – addresses tasks 61 – 70 on day 7; Group 8 – addresses tasks 71 – 80 on day 8; Group 9 – addresses tasks 81 – 90 on day 9; Group 10 – addresses tasks 91 – 100 on day 10. Students will be guided by task cards for these presentation to engage the class in their assigned chapters. Each team will identify, define and share new words.

Task cards = chapter numbers, so that Task Card 1 relates to chapter 1and Task Card 100 relates to chapter 100 for instance. Use these prompts to guide students alone and with their peers. As teams might present 10 chapters sequentially, for instance, some of their 10 task cards will be done individually and others will be completed as a team.

STUDENT GENERATED TEST QUESTIONS– Have teams create a test question from their task cards and a team answer key developed during these active learning prompts.

Ensure that each team shows evidence of engaging the materials with evidence of details from their novel review. Have students add their new words to a word board.
