PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

This STEAM mini-unit combines the social studies topic of historical lighthouses with the engineering activity of planning and building a model lighthouse. The unit includes:

-Basic Facts: students write what they know about lighthouses
-Parts of a Lighthouse: diagram and word bank
-Lighthouse Styles: illustrated fact sheet
-Pick your Style: planning page
-Engineering Principles: tips for building
-Make a Plan: planning page
-Step by Step: planning page

I use this with my fourth graders, who do a yearly unit on lighthouses that includes a visit to a local lighthouse. As the librarian and STEAM teacher I then read Beacons of Light: Lighthouses by Gail Gibbons, teach a full-class lesson on Principles of Engineering, and work with the kids in small groups to construct their lighthouses out of paper towel rolls, cereal boxes, and other found objects.
