This exam covers the entirety of Laura Esquivel's novel Like Water for Chocolate. It includes 60 multiple-choice questions (A-E) and an answer key.
The goal of this exam is to evaluate student comprehension of the novel and to ascertain whether or not they have actually read the text. Therefore, the questions emphasize details and proper nouns (like the names of minor characters and settings) in order to thwart student use of online summaries, like those available on sites like Sparknotes and Shmoop.
I have used this exam in my own 12th grade English classes over the years and have found it to be a good assessment of student comprehension.
