Liliuokalani: Last Queen of Hawaii Primary Source Reading

This Common Core-aligned reading covers the background to the US annexation of Hawaii and Queen Liliuokalani's response to Congress.

The introduction explains why the United States annexed Hawaii and the role of sugar plantation owners, John L. Stevens, and Queen Liliuokalani. Then her brief protest letter to Congress is provided as an excellent primary source document to use in your classroom.

Following the reading, students complete a 1-page set of Common Core-aligned analysis questions. This makes for an excellent homework assignment, warm-up, or in-class activity. An answer key for this is provided for your convenience.
