Independent shopping activity. Students will have different amounts of money to spend, ranging from $30 to $100.
There will be three “stores” set up – a grocery store, a toy store, and a clothing store. Students will take turns rotating stores and make choices based on their wants and needs. They will pick up the items to put them in their cart, and they cannot spend more than the amount of money they were given. I will tell them to pretend the money they have is all they have for a week. Each rotation will be about five minutes. At the end of each rotation, students will have two minutes to double check how much money they have left to spend and return items if needed. This will be repeated for the other two stations. Then, we will come together and talk about how much money they each had and what they got. Did they save any money? How did they make their choices? They should put their items in an envelope with their names and how much they started with, spent, and have left on the outside of the envelope and hand them in.
