This activity covers Lincoln’s 4 major speeches/proclamations during the Civil War that helped state his purpose for the war. Additionally, I have focused on TEK (Texas Essential Knowledge) 8.8C, which states “Analyze Abraham Lincoln’s ideas about liberty, equality, union, and government as contained in his first and second inaugural address and the Gettysburg Address…”
In the activity, students first follow along with a teacher PPT and fill in their student handout Cornell notes. This PPT is sort, sweet, and gets right to the point.
Next, 6 excerpts from the speeches are provided on student cards, and the students rotate the cards or in groups to read through the excerpt and answer the pre-made questions on the back of the cards.
This activity should take about 1 class period. 15-20 minutes to go through the PPT, and 20-30 minutes to go through the excerpts.
